Combine cultures

Combine the plants: plant lavender near thyme, both can withstand a bit of drought. Combine tomatoes and marigolds, the latter will protect the former against whiteflies or white flies. Cabbages appreciate the proximity of celery which keeps away the white butterfly, the caterpillar of which devours the cabbage leaves ...

Practice crop rotation so as not to deplete soil reserves and limit the spread of pests.

And never leave the ground bare; plant green manure at the end of the harvest.

Save water

A few easy-to-learn habits save water and partly recycle it. Thanks to the use of recovery tanks, drip diffusers and other hoses with holes, the gardener manages this vital source as well as possible.

If you only have a terrace or even a balcony, this does not prevent the rainwater from collecting! Knowing the needs of plants and preparing the soil well limits water evaporation.

If your plants are thirsty, using infiltration and irrigation techniques as well as mulching also saves waste.

Organic auxiliaries

In the vegetable garden, special shelters are set up to accommodate ladybugs: they eat up to 150 aphids per day.

The lacewing is also a voracious predator, preying on aphids, Colorado beetles, mites, citadels and young caterpillars. From April to October, they are a valuable biological aid against pests and diseases. Just like the birds that you will make come back by planting hedges and generous shrubs in fruit.

Finally, all "healthy" organic waste is used to supply all the plants with humus, which contributes to a good balance of nutrients and a good structure of the soil.

A compost bin behind the house - and why not a smaller container on a balcony - is therefore essential.
